Could there be a more aptly named restaurant to review this week than ‘Bol Gappa’’ restaurant in Dubai Parks and Resorts in Jebel Ali Village, Dubai .A killer combination of food and Bollywood is something that every Indian would just die for. Imagine sitting and dining with posters of iconic movies and bollywood stars, won’t it just be an amazing topic to just start chat about with your companion? Take for starters , you are meeting someone for the first time or it’s a first date with your bae and you enter this fancy place full of bollywood posters and amazing décor. I’m sure, you will not have to think about what exactly do you talk about .And once , two people start talking about Bollywood , there’s absolutely no stopping them .And Bol Gappa , is one of that kind of an amazing place ,which is just a short walk from both motion gate and bollywood part located near riverland area .This Bollywood themed restaurant with its colourful exterior is hard to miss. Decorated generously with posters from every era of Indian movie releases, Bol Gappa’s truly magical setting transports you into a world of glamour, glitz ,drama and enchantment from the moment you walk in . With TV screens featuring the latest film songs and filmy dialogues hanging from every corner and even from the ceiling , this little gem of a restaurant is a rare find and a true testimony to it’s name .
Serving authentic vegetarian Indian cuisine on a budget, it’s understandably busy (restaurant was packed with Arabs, I wonder they love Indian cuisine than us) but friendly nonetheless. Fortunately, the Bollywood bombed with its menu. There were accompanying descriptions of the dishes they offer, which makes your mouth melt , even before the food and drinks arrives
We ordered for two drinks, one mango lassi –AED 22 (churred yoghurt with mango puree and these two are the perfect combination that I can have at any point of time and Yaas..!! It was indeed full bodied) and one citrus sparkle- AED 19, which was a fizzy drink ,with fusion of orange, pineapple, lemon juice and mint .
Coming back to food, we opted for three starters (although we were only two person, seeing the starter options, I was tempted to order three). The starter we ordered were Amar Akbar Anthony Cheese Baguette –AED 22 , Mexican Bhel Puri –AED 24 and Paneer Popcorn-AED 26.
Our starters were brought in, less than ten minutes later, smelling great and piping hot.Our first starter consisted of melange of tri coloured peppers with Asian herbs and cheese, topped on a four toasted flat baguette bread and baked in the oven served with fries . It was large portion, so if ordering this, you may want to keep that in mind. It was tasty , with a slight spice and Mexican twist to it.
Meanwhile, my friend’s starter platter, which was paneer popcorn with mint chutney spiced coated with gram flour batter , deep fried and served with cheese were devoured within minutes. Mexican Bhel Puri, reminded me a bag of Mexican Doritos, yet even more glorious with the addition of fresh ingredients like boiled potatoes, onions, chillies and chopped cilantro . Her exclamation of ‘oh wow’, when all the starters arrived and seeing the presentation , matched to her reaction when tasting them
Even though ,I’m a foodie, almost all the time , my tummy gets full by having the starters itself .I tried to control to have less portion of starters, which fails each and every time, when the starters are that irresistible to stop .
So for the main course ,we just chose Paneer Khurchan –AED 35, which is a bollywood set menu, with cottage cheese and coloured pepper fingers cooked in a spicy onion tomato masala, scented with fennel topped with crushed roasted pappas served with choice of Indian bread or steam rice accompanied with raitha, poppad and pickle and arrived at our table beautifully presented. The truly genius paneer kurchan was sublime and memorable. . The breads however, were wolfed down, with the cheese naan possibly winning the vote for ‘nicest naan ever’.
After that, we were stuffed. Our hopes of fitting in desert were dashed, although the fudge brownie trifle, mango phirne mousse and array of traditional Indian puddings like jalebi cheesecake , Chowpatty Kulfi sounded very tempting.
It is a place where I would be definitely going back , to get more of the things I like and try some other delicacies which they have on their menu. Oh! And I love ,filmy music J
